Silent Running

Did you ever wonder about all those one hit wonders? All those bands with just one amazing song that everyone knows and remembers. Why? Why do they make it with just one song? What was the inspiration? What idea made them write those words, in just the right rhythms and beats?

What indeed?

I have thought about this here and there.. Especially when you used to have to purchase an entire album to get just one song off it. Man, that shit was painful. For some reason, who knows why, but most bands cannot get ten good songs together onto one album. There is the number one hit… and the rest.

So back to the original question… why? If you listen to some of these songs, in fact, a good deal more than some, they actually say something.

Is it prophetic stuff?

Is it messages from somewhere else?

It is always God of course, but for those who may want more… what gives inspiration?

The kind of inspiration that inspires everyone who hears it to want to hear it… want to follow what it says… want, need, it never to leave them.

A favorite song. There are so many.

One of mine is Silent Running by Mike and the Mechanics. 1985. Please read over these lyrics and listen to this music. They seem more important now.. more like something trying to tell us something through these guys. Strange as it is, I don’t care, my thoughts you know 😉 It was pretty much the biggest hit for this band, unless you’re a big fan and then you could probably argue there were more.

Interesting tidbit about the song itself during the 90’s here via Wikipedia:

The song was banned by the BBC during the Gulf War due         to its address of war, nationalism and religion, as well as a       direct reference to weaponry in the line, “There’s a gun and       ammunition just inside the doorway.”[5]

Even more interesting was the inspiration for the song itself. Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia about the authors and how they came up with it.

 According to Rutherford, the song

is about a guy who’s traveled light-years away, out in space somewhere, and he’s ahead in time. Therefore he knows what’s going to happen to his wife and kids back home, on Earth. And he’s trying to get the message to them to say what’s going to happen, the kind of anarchy, the breakdown of society, to tell them to be prepared.[6]

Hmm… I wonder? Check out the song and these lyrics… Let’s hope they don’t become too prophetic huh?

Silent Running
Mike + The Mechanics (links to song)
Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting will be close at hand
Don’t believe the church and state
And everything they tell you
Believe in me, I’m with the high command
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
There’s a gun and ammunition
Just inside the doorway
Use it only in emergency
Better you should pray to God
The Father and the Spirit
Will guide you and protect from up here
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Swear allegiance to the flag
Whatever flag they offer
Never hint at what you really feel
Teach the children quietly
For some day sons and daughters
Will rise up and fight while we stand still
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running?
Can you hear me running, can you hear me calling you?
Can you hear me, can you hear me running (can you hear me calling you?)
Can you hear me hear running, can you hear me calling you?
(Can you hear me running) Can hear me running (can you hear me calling you)?
Can you hear me
Hear me calling you
(Can you hear me running) hear me running, babe
Can you hear me running (hear me running)
Calling you
