Basic Spirit Classifications
What makes a “Bad spirit” or “Bad ghost”? Why do some entities want to hurt or possess us? The answers to theses questions are not solid, but we have some good ideas. A “bad ghost” can be mischievous or volatile. Smelly and disruptive. Dangerous at times. They can be confused with demons, poltergeists, or shadow people but are less dangerous.
Knowing the characteristics of a bad spirit is necessary for good safety. Check the rarity section of the chart to see how often on a scale of 1 to 5 a type of spirit is found. 5 being the most common. Check the danger level to determine precautions. Scale reads 1-5 with 5 being the most dangerous.
Types of Hauntings
Most hauntings fall into the residual memory or lonely ghost category. Demonic activity is not as common as movies make it out to be but with the level of violence in humankind growing, so is demonic activity. The rarity of Shadow People is decreasing as the level of human consciousness grows as well.
Poltergeist activity is mentioned here as well, though I believe “poltergeist” has become a word that simply describes a humans own ability to move things and cause incidents simply with their own energy they are unaware of. It definitely can affect a person’s environment.
Always try to do good research on a site. Property information can be found by accessing the links in your reference guide. Look for multiple owners or sales, changes made to the property over time and deaths (usually indicated by words like “estate” or “etal – or and others” inheritances or gifts).
Check out the local news archives to see if anything has happened there. You can usually Google the street name and state as well. See what comes up. The history of a place gives you valuable tools. It also will give you a good idea as to whether or not the property can be “cleared” or made livable. Remember there are at least 7 spiritual realms with vortex’s and portals sprinkled throughout the Earth to get you there. A portal may be closed but what went on in the area while it was open? Are there residual memories, angry spirits or other things hanging around?
The 7 Spiritual Realms Are: Spiritually Ascended (Heaven); The In-Between (Purgatory); Earth; Spiritually Descended (Hell); Past, Present, and Future. We live in the Present Earth unless our atmosphere is somehow merged with another realm.

Their memories basically stick like metal to a magnet and hang around. They can be relatively easy to clear with good vibes, open windows and positive thinking. Usually they will fade with time. Physical Reactions to Spirits
When a magnet is passed over a cassette tape it can erase everything on the tape simply because of the reaction between the two energies… When a spirit enters your environment it has effects on you similar to the magnet and the cassette tape. Most people can actually feel a spirit presence in the room. Like a reaction to static electricity.
Always use your senses when entering haunted or supposedly haunted places. Be aware of your surroundings and become aware of your physical reactions to spirits.

Is it worth an investigation? You can pretty much determine its worth it if someone has called you to investigate, there are a lot of rumors surrounding a place, lots of deaths have occurred there or you feel something when you go around the place. Here is a list of the common signs of a haunting:

Signs of a Gas Leak
Be aware there are lots of explanations for a supposed haunting. One of the most dangerous comes from natural or methane gas. This gas is used in stoves and heating units in many homes and has been responsible for many deaths. It has also been mistaken for many paranormal events. Many families have been saved as well by smart ghost hunters.
Always remember that ghosts do not exist until they do. The problem with a gas leak is it produces symptoms in people and animals that resemble something supernatural.

If any of these symptoms are present you should call the gas company and have them come check it out.
Electrical problems can be confused with a haunting as well. Here are some symptoms of an electrical problem in a house:
Lights flicker – Flash on and off
Foul or Floral Smells – Electrical Burning
Metallic taste in your mouth
Humming or buzzing
Light bulbs and Breakers blow frequently
Thermostats not working – Temperature Changes
Like the gas, if you suspect there may be an electrical issue call the electric company to come check it out for you. These utility companies will usually do these checks for you for free. One of the most popular forms of “hauntings” occur up north where there are a lot of steam pipes. Here’s some “ghostly” symptoms of steam pipes:
Howling and Moaning
Loud to soft bangs and knocks
Hissing Noises
Steamy haze
Unpredictable & severe temperature changes
Safety
Safety while ghost hunting is the utmost priority. You have to protect yourself from physical and spiritual things. You must guard yourself against demons and evil spirits; as well as vagrants and criminals. Once you start hunting ghosts, for some reason it seems, they start hunting you. Especially the bad ones. You must be careful not to stumble upon groups of vagrants or criminal activity. Remember these steps and you can have fun and be safe.
- Fear
Don’t be afraid to be afraid. Always keep a healthy respect for your fear emotion. If you feel afraid you are vulnerable and should leave the site. It’s more of a warning than a weakness.
- The Buddy System
Try to find a partner who will go with you. Even if they are only waiting outside. If you are under 18 you must go with a parent or guardian.
- Inform People
If you decide to go it alone, make sure you tell people where you are going and when you should be back. This way if you don’t return they know to go looking for you.
- Have someone spiritual pray for you while your out.
- Always have a flashlight, extra batteries and a backup light source. Spirits have a way of killing batteries quickly.
- Bug Repellent
- Try to make a lot of noise when entering graveyards or abandoned buildings. Let it quiet down in a minute but this lets vagrants, criminals and animals of your presence and gives them time to get away. Its never a good idea to surprise unwary creatures that don’t want to be messed with.
- Be careful of stray dogs, rabid raccoons, snakes, rats, spiders, bats etc…
- The Lord’s Prayer and Psalm 23
Recite one of these in times of fear or when you feel you need protection. Say it with power & feeling.
- Holy Water
Spray this over your clothes and person. Pray and ask the Lord for protection from evil while you do it.
11. Confidence
You must feel confident. Believe in your protective equipment. Believe that God loves you and is looking out. Know that you are not alone. Visualize your light even in the darkest darkness.. Believe you are an inhospitable environment for a spirit to inhabit.
12. Always have a safety whistle in case you get stuck somewhere.
Signs of Possession and Hitchhikers
How can you tell if you have picked up a “hitchhiker”? All haunting symptoms will remain with you after you leave the hunt and they will stay with you every where you go but a church or Holy place. You will feel heavy, anxious, paranoid, and bad luck will happen wherever you go. Eventually a drain of energy, sickness and headaches will occur.
Possession is usually more noticeable by other people but you will know you don’t feel the same. Severe emotional disturbances especially towards violence or anger. An aversion to cleanliness and bathing. You will not act the same at all in a few weeks.
In case of a hitchhiker or possession your first line of defense is to keep them away from you to begin with. Prayers, Holy water and the Cross will do this. Sage will help for instant effects. Do your history and research on a place so you know individual names if you can. In battle with an evil spirit it is good to know it’s name… Remind them there are witnesses to their actions even if they are dead. The Bible is one of the most readily available books that contain the original law concerning demons and spirits. They fear it so keep one with you.
A packet of black cat fur or white dog hair is good to keep evil away as well. Don’t leave it behind or take it out of your pocket.
One of the main rules concerning spirits is to never invite them in. Good and bad spirits alike. Remember that bad spirits and demons can use good spirits to get what they want sometimes. Humans are not the only possess able creatures. Do not invite them in to your body or your home. You are alive and they are not. Even good ghosts can’t be trusted sometimes.
Safety Symbols
There are two or three symbols that can keep evil away temporarily… The Cross, the Triskele, and the Star of David. Obviously the Cross is the symbol of Jesus Christ, the ultimate ghost hunter… The Triskele is the symbol of the Holy Trinity… The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost and the Star of David is the symbol for God’s bloodline, God’s Holy People.
It is always necessary to prepare yourself before going on a hunt. Both spiritually and physically. Make sure you know why you are hunting the dead. Evil likes confusion and dirt. It is important to be clean. Take a bath first. Meditate and pray. Cleanse your head. You need the right mind set and confidence. Never think you can handle everything. Always be careful. Know when to run away. You may think you’re at a standard ghost haunting and end up in a portal. It’s rare… but anything can happen.
The Law
The laws presented at the end of this chapter pertain to Florida, but the introduction here encompasses some very important universal truths. Ever since ghost hunting became popular, law enforcement officers have been chasing trespassers, vandals and potential burglars more and more… Ghost hunters that break and enter into buildings are irresponsible and make the rest of us look bad.
Litterbugs and party goers in the cemeteries are illegal and disrespectful. Arsonists in abandoned houses… These people give everyone a bad name and can be held responsible for padlocks on graveyards and boarded up houses. If a site is abandoned and boarded up do not break in. You usually can get good info just from around the grounds. Take photos of upstairs windows, hold the camera up to cracks in boards… You get the picture. You can try to contact the property owners for permission to see inside as well.
If there are no signs anywhere and no efforts to keep people out your pretty free to explore. Remember abandoned places like this also make great homes for vagrants and criminals alike.

Short Tips
White candles lit in windows draw spirits and start fires.
Use sage to clear a space temporarily of spirit presence.
The world of paranormal activity is still being explored.. Not all is known, always be careful. Never assume you know all the facts.
Spirits like shiny objects and floral smells.
Hang bells to be notified of spirit presence… but demons like bells too.
Mirrors can be conductors for spirits.

Willow trees are particularly strange places… they say you can run into the devil under them.
